Indra Maria Barbara Persoons (Brasschaat, België, 1999) componeert twee soorten muziek. Enerzijds componeert ze verhalende muziek waarbij personages gekoppeld worden aan een muzikaal thema. Anderzijds gebruikt ze improvisaties als basismateriaal voor composities. Deze improvisaties zijn gemaakt op de meest emotionele momenten uit haar leven, zo heeft ze regelmatig improvisaties opgenomen wanneer ze huilde achter haar cello.

“Soms heb ik het gevoel dat niemand me begrijpt, de enige manier om dan troost te vinden is door cello te spelen, te improviseren, alle slechte emoties uit me te laten stromen. De composities die ik uit dit materiaal maak vind ik zeer waardevol omdat ze oprecht zijn en recht uit het hart komen.”

Ze kan je laten lachen met haar humoristische timing en je laten huilen met haar hartstochtelijke frases. Ze houdt van experimenteren met klankkleur door uitgebreide technieken te gebruiken. Haar werk reikt verder dan de concertwereld, zo heeft ze gewerkt met filmmakers, theaterregisseur Johan Vandenbussche, tangodanseres Astrid Cerpentier en nam ze deel aan verschillende interdisciplinaire projecten in LUCA School of Arts.

Indra behaalde in 2022 de master in compositie aan LUCA School of Arts te Leuven, onder begeleiding van Piet Swerts. In 2021 ging ze op Erasmus naar het Utrechtse Conservatorium waar ze compositieles volgde bij Jeroen D’hoe en Caroline Ansink.

“Zodra ik noten kon lezen schreef ik ze ook. Toen ik tien was schreef ik liedjes, liedjes werden stukjes voor cello, wat evolueerde in kamermuziek.”

Indra’s eerste serieuze compositie schreef ze toen ze vijftien was. Met dat stuk genaamd Doel won ze in 2017 de Internationale Compositiewedstrijd van het blokfluitfestival in Nordhorn.

Indra houdt van musicals, Griekse mythologie en wandelen in de natuur. Deze factoren vormen de inspiratiebron voor haar composities. Zo heeft ze veel verhalende muziek geschreven die gebaseerd is op een Griekse mythe. Verwondering over de schoonheid van de natuur is ook regelmatig een vertrekpunt waarmee ze componeert.

Schrijven en spelen zijn voor Indra onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden.

“Als tienjarige wist ik al dat muziek mijn roeping was. Toen ik moest kiezen of ik cello of compositie zou studeren voelde het alsof ik moest kiezen tussen mijn twee kinderen. Ik heb ze allebei nodig en ik doe het allebei heel graag.”

Naast ‘Doel’ kregen er nog een paar andere composities een plek in de finale van een compositiewedstrijd.  ‘Rite of Fire’ voor altviool solo werd finalist in de Northern California Viola Society Composition Competition 2019. ‘Prelude voor Franck’ voor viool en piano werd in 2021 finalist in de Prelude Wedstrijd van Nicolas Dupont. In 2022 won Indra de SABAM prijs.

Indra Maria Barbara Persoons (Brasschaat, België, 1999) composes two kinds of music. On one hand, there is music that tells a story, where characters get assigned their own theme. And on the other hand there is music that arises from improvisation. These improvisations are made on the most emotional moments of her life, she regularly records improvisations behind her cello while crying. 

“Sometimes I feel like nobody understands me, the only way to alleviate the pain is to play the cello, to improvise, to let all emotions come out, both good and bad. I love these kinds of compositions because they are sincere and straight from the heart.”

She can make you laugh with her humouristic timing and cry with her passionate melodies. She likes to experiment with timbre by using extended techniques. Her work reaches further than the concert world, she also collaborated with theater director Johan Vandenbussche, tango dancer Astrid Cerpentier and participated in multiple interdisciplinary projects at LUCA School of Arts.

Indra studied from 2017-2022 composition at LUCA School of Arts (Belgium) with professor dr. Piet J. Swerts. In 2021 she also studied at the Conservatory of Utrecht (Netherlands) with the Erasmus program, where she got composition lessons with Jeroen D’hoe and Caroline Ansink.

“As soon as I could read notes I started writing them as well. When I was ten I wrote poems, poems became songs, songs became little pieces for cello which evolved into chamber music.”

Indra wrote her first serious composition at the age of fifteen. That piece called 'Doel' won the International Composition Competition of the recorder festival in Nordhorn (Germany). 

Indra loves musicals, Greek mythology and nature hikes. These are often sources of inspiration while composing. She has written a lot of music based on Greek myths. Reveling in the beauty of nature is also regularly a starting point for composing.

Composing and playing are deeply connected for Indra.

“When I was ten I already knew that music was my destiny. When I had to choose between studying the cello or composition it felt like I had to choose between my two children. I love and need them both.”

Besides ‘Doel’ other compositions have been selected for the final round of certain composition competitions. ‘Rite of Fire’ for solo viola became finalist at the Northern California Viola Society Composition Competition 2019. ‘Prelude voor Franck’ for violin and piano became finalist in 2021 at the Prelude Competition of Nicolas Dupont (Belgium). Indra won the SABAM price in 2022.
